Acupuncture for Pediatrics
Acupuncture is increasingly being used to support the health and well-being of children and adolescents, with some of the most common conditions treated including anxiety, digestive disorders, injuries and sleep disturbances.
Many young patients experience chronic stress, trouble focusing, or overstimulation, and acupuncture provides a gentle approach to help regulate the nervous system.
For kiddos with anxiety, acupuncture can promote a sense of calm, as well as mood improvement. Since the pandemic, we have noticed an increased interest in parents bringing in their children for acupuncture.
Parents often seek acupuncture as a supportive therapy to reduce the need for medications or to address symptoms that conventional treatments may not fully resolve.
Additionally, acupuncture is frequently used to help with physical complaints such as headaches, abdominal pain, allergies, and musculoskeletal pain from sports or growth spurts. Adolescents, in particular, may face recurring issues like migraines, menstrual discomfort, or gastrointestinal problems, which can significantly impact their daily lives and academic performance. Acupuncture works by promoting circulation, reducing inflammation, relieving muscle tension and restoring balance to the body’s systems.
A study published in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics found that acupuncture was effective in reducing chronic musculoskeletal pain in youth, including those with sports injuries, with minimal side effects and high patient satisfaction.
